He was born 27th Feb 1899.
1901 Census he was age 2 living with his family at 71 Fowler Street, Derby
3rd Jul 1905 he transferred to St John’s C. of E. school from St John’s Infants’ School.
5th Mar 1906 he left and went to Curzon Street School.
1st Feb 1909 he joined Kings Mead Senior School, Nuns Street until he left school 27th Feb 1913.
1911 census he was age 12 and a scholar, living with his family at 71 Fowler Street, Derby. He had 7 siblings living with him. One sibling had already died by 1911.
When he enlisted he had been working at Jones & Co. George Thomas Brown, who was also on the memorial, also worked for Jones & Co.
His father Tom was born in Derby and was a railway engine painter. His mother Sarah Jane was born in Bath, Somerset. His parents received a telegram 22 Aug 1917 to tell them their son was in hospital in Calais “so seriously ill” with a “fever of unknown origin”. It also said that permission to visit couldn’t be granted.
